Spring Is Here
John Here….
This past winter we have seen some really strange weather.  Warmer than usual and then
the temperature dropped severely causing stress to trees and shrubs.  As you know, stressed plants are more susceptible to disease and insect infestation.  As your trees and shrubs bud this spring, you may want to pay close attention to them for the following signs:

Hemlocks –  Wooley Adelgid – white speckled spots on the needles, dying branches, or yellowing of the needles.
Spruce – Red Spider-Mite - dead or dying branches, yellowing of needles,  or galls at the end of branches.
Pines –  Borers – look for oozing near the base of the trees. This is caused by Turpentine beetle.  Also, look for tip moths in early summer; look on the tips of the tree for browning or dying.
Birches – Bronze birch borers – check the bark for “d” shaped holes that stain the bark orange.  Also, look for branch die back.
Broadleaf’s and Maples(Red), Crabapples, Fruit trees and bushes, and other deciduous plants.   Gypsy Moth and   Winter Moth –  was a big problem last year. Please look for small caterpillars, or tree not leafing out, your eyes will tell you if the tree is later than normal which means, its probably Winter Moth.  As most of you have already seen Winter moths were flying around just about everywhere.  They seem to be out on a stronger force than last year.  This means we will have a larger infestation of caterpillars this
year than last.   As you know in moth stage we can not do anything, but once they emerge they can become ravenous to a lot of our trees and shrubs.  Make sure you contact us to be
put on to our spray list.
Cedar - Cedar Bark Beetle is showing up and killing Cedars. It looks like small bore holes in the trunk of the tree (many small holes).  If it shows up, then other trees must be sprayed and the infected tree removed.

All of these can easily be treated and could save the trees if caught in time.
Check our web page for information on this and other types of Pests to be on the look out for.
